Moon Magic

No videos or pictures in your ILQW email? See them at http://ilovequoddywild.blogspot.com

Tim Foulkes sent this photo of the moon around yesterday. I was so impressed with the quality that I asked for more info. Here it is.

Hi Art
Yes, the moon shot was taken last night from my deck in Bayside with my Z28 Panasonic camera with its Leica lens and 18 x optical zoom.
The image stabilization system works well if the camera is held steady, and supporting it on the edge of the roof helped.

EXIF information is available, so from Windows Explorer or Viewer, if you right click on the file or image to pull down the menu, then click on Properties at the bottom, and select the Advanced button of the Summary tab, you will have all the details, like type of camera, software version, focal length (86 mm), shutter speed (1/320 sec), aperture (f 5.6), metering method (spot), etc, etc.

Most digital images have this EXIF info imbedded in them, (all mine have) even after they have been cropped as this one was.

It's not bad for a $400 camera!

I took a daytime shot on August 27 when it was half full, and I did not have a support of any kind for the camera, but I was sitting on a peninsula of rock where Greenlaw Brook enters the lower Waweig river.

Help Needed .... Have You Seen This Bird?

We've been telling the world how rich and vital Quoddy really is and it seems to be working! People are coming from around the world to check our blogs I Love Quoddy Wild and Fundy whale. Take a look at the Feedjit traffic map. It`s amazing.

So jump on board and become a contributor! All you need to do is send us an email from a cell phone or computer. Attach one or two photos of wildlife, plants, water, earth, or sky along with your written words and email to: artmackay.ilovequoddywild at blogger.com. The subject line is the title of your post and the body is the text.

No photo? Then just send a text message or email about what you saw and where it was. It's as simple as that and important too.

The red-necked phalarope is just one species that we need information about. It`s an important species that feeds on the same food as north Atlantic right whales. We think it's the "canary" of right whale survival and it`s been coming back to Head Harbour Passage in recent years after a decade of virtual absence. This is a really good sign, so please let us know if you see them! We're mapping their occurrence and distribution in the Bay.

Chair blind for hummingbird photos

Here it is next to the quince bush where they like to sit. Inside is a chair and lots of zippered openings at various spots. I can close the opening around the camera and they don't see a thing. I have to be very quiet, though. It also keeps the insects out, big plus. Joyce

Quoddy Eagles on Flickr

Quoddy Eagles now on Flickr at:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/quoddyeagles/

Our beautiful eagles have just been given a group of their own on Flickr. This is a new way for you to contribute to the I Love Quoddy Wild database.

If you already have a Flickr account, please join our group and send your eagle photos and observations. If not, then go directly to our group and join, or send us an email and we will take care of that for you if you wish.

The season is underway and we would like to start getting information in on our eagle population, nesting sites, fledglings and more. So join today, send your photos and help us take care of this precious Quoddy "asset".

Thanks
Art

Oh yes! Invite your friends. We need more observers and photographers since we hope to have a special Quoddy Eagles Day; a day when we all check for eagles, their young, location, activities, nests, and interesting behaviour in your own area of Quoddy and report this to I Love Quoddy Wild. The data will become part of a report to be prepared next fall.

Spring comes to St. Andrews, Mascarene, and Letete from the Air

St. Andrews with Mascarene, and Letete in the distance - another striking photo from the "ethers".

Thanks Tim and Katherine!

I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
where never lark, or even eagle flew"

Photographers - Contribute to "On The Wild Side"

Hi Art,

I know we have been distracted, but do you think some sort of photo (and otherwise) display of wild "blooms", from lichens on up, might be doable by May 1? I know the group on the islands that are so prolific with their photos have some good material other than birds, and perhaps they would be willing to contribute a few prints of "blooms".

I have a good printer for up to letter size, but people would have to trust me with their files and to give credit where credit is due.

Mounting and proper display could also be expensive if done right so it would be better if people lent us their hard copies properly mounted. I don't mind doing a few though.

I have not yet gone through my digital pictures to see what there is, as it is in itself a daunting task as they are not in folders yet.

May 1 is 2 weeks early for even the wild blue violets here, as well as all the berry and apple trees, so I suspect any display of wild blooms will be mostly photographic.

Please let me know what you think, and post this to I Love Quoddy Wild if you like.
For more information and registration info, contact Tim Foulkes at tjdaff@nbnet.nb.ca

We would like to promote this here at ILQW so send your photos as you contribute them and we will feature them here as part of the exhibit promotion. Good luck with this!!!
