WHALES: WOW! Imagine this coming up alongside your Kayak

blowup

From Joyce Morrell. Taken at Wilson’s Beach Campobello. Is this two whales or one (take a close look)? What kind do you think?
Sent by Bobby Hooper who has this to add.

Got it from one of the seasonal residents who was out kayaking and was in the middle of a flock of gulls that was diving for food when.......up came the whale. No conditions are attached to the picture so put it up if you like. Her name is Linda Hallas from Florida.Originally posted in August, 2010

Campobello Eagles

Yesterday ( November 29) was a lovely, calm day and I took the blind out to the porch early to see if the eagles would come and sit on the sugar maple and they did! The first to come was the male who sat behind a tangle of limbs that was impossible for the camera to get through. But soon along came the female and sat in a very good spot. The photos start at the blue one with the flying eagle and go to the end.  I enjoyed this day very much.  Joyce

White-winged scoters, Oct.29th, Friar's Bay, Campobello

About 40 to 50 white winged scoters around the wharf at Friar's Bay, resting near the sheltered cliffs and diving near the wharf. This is the same place the mergansers use all winter. They have been in the same spot for several days. Probably because the bottom never gets dragged there.

They may know that there is a good sized storm coming. Joyce

CAMPOBELLO: Kittiwakes and waves on the beach Sat. October 15 Joyce

CAMPOBELLO: Eagle on the trees this morning, Oct.10th

It was a beautiful morning, calm and full of fall color in the sky and on the water. I could hear the eagle family in the woods and eventually one came around and lit on the usual tree. Joyce

Purple fringed orchids, RCIP, Campobello July 24.2011

The purple fringed orchids are on Friar's head on Campobello, in the park. It is important to leave orchids alone. If picked, or broken, they will not return to that spot. But they are lovely to admire from a slight distance.

More bog plants

I tried out my new camera on the bog plants today. I especially liked the orchid. Enjoy! Joyce

Yellowthroats. rose pogonias and pitcher plants photographed on a 20 minute bog walk this afternoon, July 22,2011. Hermit thrushes, veerys and white throated sparrows were all singing. It was a chorus with all the best musicians. The yellowthroat male hid his face behind a branch with one eye looking out at me. He figured he was hidden

FLOWERS: Beauty at Roosevelt Campobello International Park

As you can see from the attached images of bog laurel, Rhodora, Labrador tea, and beach head iris, it’s a great time to enjoy wildflowers at Roosevelt Campobello International Park.

Spruce Grouse, Campobello

About 20 minutes after speaking with two Alabama birdwatchers about seeing a spruce grouse on the Glensevern Road separating Herring Cove Provincial Park and Roosevelt Campobello International Park, the female and chicks were back at the road’s edge ‘dusting’ to rid themselves of insects. The shot of two of the four chicks is not the clearest, but it was the first time I have seen young spruce grouse.

Bunchberries in bloom, Campobello

At the end of our point we have always had bunchberries. When they bloom they cover not just what you see here, but the whole edge of the point in a carpet of blossoms. I love to take people down the trail and watch their astonishment when they see so many blossoms. This piece of land has been largely untouched for about a hundred years or so, so the little plants have not been disturbed. In fact, we encourage them by clearing the edge of taller plants.  This is such a brief and lovely display and few people ever see it.  Joyce
