Sabine's Gull Feeding at Bay of Fundy's Old Sow Whirlpool

At 2:36 PM -0400 9/2/09, Chris Bartlett wrote to NatureNB:

I spotted a Sabine's Gull with lots of Bonaparte's Gulls off of Deer Island Point today (9/2/09). The bird flew back and forth across  the border between Eastport, Maine and Deer Island, New Brunswick  while it fed in the upwellings of the Old Sow whirlpool.

Eastport - Deer Island Ferry Sightings

No videos or pictures in your ILQW email? See them at http://ilovequoddywild.blogspot.com

Art,

I and a friend took the Eastport-to-Deer Island ferry, and back, today. On the way to Deer Island we saw a juvenile and an adult minke whale several times, along with numerous harbour porpoise, and seals. On the return to Eastport, we again saw one minke and harbour porpoise and a seal.

The minkes were between Indian Island and Dog Island, nearer Indian Island.

Whale Watching in the Old Sow

July 17th - Danielle's Quoddy Link blog reports a finback whale in HH Passage off Black Rock but they had limited contact due to the fog. However, another whale watching boat, Fundy Tide Runners, reported a minke whale in the Old Sow, in Western Passage between the south tip
of Deer Island. The Old Sow  is the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western hemisphere and runs hardest at 3 hours before high tide. Birds and mammals regularly shift to these areas where the upwellings bring feed to the surface.

Danielle reports: We made our way there and what a great trip it turned  out to be. There was so much life there, with many harbour porpoise and  birds feeding in the same area, it was fantastic. Quoddy Link's Blog

Over 130 Porpoise Sightings in Western Passage This Week!

See the pictures and subscribe at http://ilovequoddywild.blogspot.com

We were delighted to receive this email with harbour porpoise sightings off Calder's Point, Deer Island. These data fill a gap in our reports from Western Passage, Passamaquoddy Bay. Hopefully more folks will send their sightings from the Bay and St. Croix Estuary areas as well.

My name is Brady Ryburn and I own a cottage with my partner, Mark Horn, on Deer Island. Jan and Joyce asked us to send you information concerning porpoise counts off Calder's Point, Deer Island. Four people were part of this project during a couple of recent days:

On June 29th, 4 people spotted 39 porpoise off Calder's Point between 1:15 p.m. and 3:20 p.m.
On June 29th, 2 people saw 18 porpoise between 3:45 p.m. until 4:25 p.m.
On June 29th, 1 person counted 14 porpoise between 4:53 p.m.  and 5:35 p.m.
On July 1st, a full day of intermittent viewing (4 total hours) gave a total of 60 porpoise off of Calder's Head.

Young minke whale

Hey Art, we had a young minke whale today between Parker and Adams, probably only about 10 feet long, so sweet!  We also had 2 minke whales in their usual spot around the 2 red buoys behind Casco.  We also stopped at Whitehorse and there were SO many black-legged kittiwakes and it looked like some were sitting on nests, which is great to see this year!

Cheers,

Porpoise In Western Passage, Deer Island

We took the ferry to Deer Island and I sat on a deck at Calder's Head overlooking Sipayik ( Pleasant Point). I was there just under an hour and I saw five porpoise; three going down Western Passage towards the outer bay and two going up towards St. Andrews. I also saw scattered gulls literally walking on water and skimming the waves and plunge diving for small fish, probably herring. June 21st 09
On the way home on the ferry we crossed three more porpoise almost under the bow of the Deer Island ferry. They were too fast for the camera. They were between the beach on Indian Island and Eastport. June 21st. 09

Another trial to bring the pictures to you.

See the pictures and subscribe here.

Seems the first trial worked but it was a little crude showing the url and all. So this is another version. does it work for you.

This is my painting. West Isles Morning, at Leonardville Deer Island. Head Harbour light is in the background. Can`t you hear the engine put-putting in the quiet of the dawn as the crew gets ready to cast off. Art
