Porcupine at Ganong Nature Park

For Andrew and family - visiting from Florida.

The North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum), is the second largest rodent in North America and is considered a nuisance animal by some.  Young are born in early spring; this juvenile was seen on the Look-out Trail on 30 June 2009.  There are a few winter dens in the park,  and many of our trees show the tell-tale gnaw marks of porcupine feeding.

  1. Thank you to Stephen for posting this great photo and giving us the chance to see one of these cute little animals. Although we didn't see any while out on the look-out trail, they could have been watching us from the trees and we would have never known!

We will not soon forget our wonderful visit to the Ganong Nature Park (and the glorious mulberries we picked right off the tree) and hope to visit again soon. Thanks again, Stephen, for the photo and your kindness.
